When is the best time to schedule my child’s first orthodontic consultation?

Generally, Dr. Corey Jones likes to see patients for the first time when they are around age 7. Although your son or daughter’s smile will not be fully made up of adult teeth just yet, we can evaluate the progression of their smile to determine if the existing teeth are growing in normally and if there are any developmental concerns that require attention. If so, Phase I pediatric orthodontics may be recommended as an effective way to help treat emerging orthodontic issues and help your child avoid the need for more involved and costly care in the future.

Can adults undergo orthodontic treatment?

Of course! As long as your jawbone and gum tissue are relatively healthy, it is never too late to pursue a straighter smile. Better yet, plenty of modern, esthetically minded treatment options are available today beyond the traditional braces model, including ceramic and clear braces, Invisalign® and more.

What are the benefits of choosing traditional braces?

While many patients shy away from the noticeably metal appearance of traditional braces, they are still a tried-and-true method for correcting significant orthodontic concerns. Their durability is perfect for accident-prone kids, and they tend to be more affordable on average than other orthodontic solutions. Patients of all ages can also enjoy dressing up their smile with their favorite color of rubber bands!

Dr. Jones will be happy to review the potential pros and cons of traditional braces with you in greater detail during your first consultation. Our team’s goal is to help you find the orthodontic treatment that is the best possible fit for you.

What foods should I avoid when wearing traditional braces?

It is a good idea to limit your exposure to any food items that are overly hard, sticky or prone to staining. Sadly, this strikes plenty of candies from the list, as well as sodas, pretzels, coffee, tea and popcorn. Also, we strongly recommend that our patients do their best to refrain from chewing on items like pens, erasers and fingernails throughout the treatment process in order to minimize their chances of damage.

I don’t want my braces to be noticeable. What do you recommend?

Dr. Corey Jones is happy to offer multiple treatment solutions that are cosmetically pleasing for the sake of our more image-conscious patients, including clear ceramic braces and Invisalign. All you need to do is schedule a consultation so that we can determine whether one of these options can effectively correct your orthodontic concerns.

How often should I be wearing my Invisalign aligners each day?

Aligners should be worn at all times, except when the patient is currently eating, brushing or flossing. If you have a big event coming up that you would like to look your very best for, it is also fine to remove the aligners for an hour or so and enjoy yourself to the fullest– just make sure that you place them back in afterward!

Will braces interfere with the ability to play instruments or participate in sports?

Although there is likely to be an adjustment period, braces should not make it difficult for you to continue playing your instrument. The same is true for sports, although we do strongly recommend the use of a mouthguard to protect both teeth and braces from harm.
